Inside Out 2 is now the ninth highest grossing film of all time. From becoming the highest grossing film of 2024 to being the highest grossing animated film of all time, the Pixar sequel has dominated the box office throughout its theatrical run. Inside Out 2's record-breaking box office continued further as it became the tenth highest grossing film of all time at the worldwide box office, surpassing The Avengers, Barbie, Frozen II, and other former box office juggernauts.
According to The Numbers, Inside Out 2 has now earned $1.666 billion globally, putting it past the 2019 live-action remake of The Lion King, which grossed $1.662 billion (via Box Office Mojo). At $1.666 billion, Inside Out 2 is close to surpassing Jurassic World's $1.671 billion as well, which would make it the eighth highest grossing film of all time at the global box office. Inside Out 3 Is All But Guaranteed After Inside Out 2's Box Office Success
Another Sequel Is Inevitable, But Still Years Away From Happening
While a followup film is not yet confirmed, with Pete Docter, Pixar's Chief Creative Officer, clarifying that a sequel is only in the early stage of brainstorming ideas, Inside Out 3 will likely happen given that it has been an unprecedented commercial and critical success. Except for Titanic, whose story could not continue for obvious reasons, every other film in the all-time top 10 global box office was followed by one or more sequels that built on their respective franchise's established box office triumphs.
With nine years passing between the releases of Inside Out and Inside Out 2, the franchise has proven that it does not need to rush out a sequel.
Avatar has three sequels on the way, the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars have films planned for years to come, and Jurassic World is rebooting the franchise with Jurassic World: Rebirth. Even 2019's The Lion King is expanding its story with the upcoming Mufasa: The Lion King, which will act as a prequel and sequel to the original film. It is difficult to imagine that Inside Out 2 will not follow the same trajectory as the other films in the all-time top 10.
